It's hard to believe it's been three months since I published my last issue of Edible Chesapeake, wow. The magazine was such a huge part of my life for three years that some time has been necessary to actually grieve over what I feel as a loss, even as I know it's also liberating. I may not yet be over it. We'll have to see how I feel when I go to farmers markets in the spring and don't see a fabulous new Edible Chesapeake cover on the farmstands. So what's next? Part of what's next is where you are now, my blog and other new features on realpeopleeatlocal.com. Kristi and I started this website before I started publishing Edible Chesapeake, and Kristi kept it going as the magazine swallowed up more and more of my time. I'm looking forward to using it as our platform going forward to continue our work in the local food system, whatever form that may take. For now, I'm hoping to be able to aggregate the oodles of information that comes to us every day from various corners of the community and make this site a go-to source that helps make and strengthen connections. Here's to what's next in 2010!

My Bio

I have been writing about food, restaurants, and other topics as a freelancer since moving back to the Washington, DC area in 2001. My work has been in national publications including Black Enterprise, Family Digest, Farming Magazine, MotherEarthNews.com, TEA A Magazine and Transitions Abroad. Locally, I have written for Edible Chesapeake, Prince George’s Gazette, Washington Post and Washington Woman. For three years, from 2006 through 2009, I was publisher and editor of Edible Chesapeake, after I purchased it from its previous owners. I am a member of Slow Food USA and Les Dames d'Escoffier, and sit on the boards of FRESHFARM Markets and the Riverdale Park Farmers Market.

I'm proud to be a native Washingtonian, as well as a graduate of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda, Maryland and of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. I spent more than five years as a foreign service officer with the U.S. Department of State, serving in Mexico City, Mexico, and Istanbul, Turkey. Making a break with consular life, I moved to Houston, Texas in 1990, where a decade-long career in public relations unfolded. In my final year in Houston, my public relations experience and diplomatic service came together as I was tapped for the position of deputy director of protocol for the City of Houston.

Houston is also where I met my husband, Damon, and gave birth to my two little Texans, Catherine and Louis. We all now live in University Park, Maryland, less than a mile from my parents. Damon's mother and brother have moved to this area as well, so now we're an extended local family enjoying local food!
