How does local food help remedy global warming?

Eating local reduces the consumption of fossil fuels used to refrigerate and transport foods around the country and the world. This fuel use must not be underestimated. One recent study found that the average distance that U.S. produce travels from its source to their points of sale is 1,494 miles. By reducing fossil fuel consumption, we reduce pollution and emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that damage our environment. By lessening our demand for fossil fuels, we can also diminish the violent global scramble to dominate oil around the world.
